Example of a de-brief following a Super Over (SO)

Example of a de-brief following a Super Over (SO) What happened? What went well?

How could we have done things smarter?

New Zealand v West Indies ICC WT20 De-brief

  • Match finished with a run out of the last ball - scores tied (Time was 18.48)

  • 3rd umpire informed on field umpires of closing time of 18.48 and advisedall umps that the SO needed to start by 18.58.

  • 4th umpire informed both team managements of what time the match needed to restart.

  • 3rd umpire counted the boundaries scored from his T20 ball counting sheet. (16 boundaries scored by WI and 12 by NZ)

  • 3rd umpire used the scorer radio to speak the scorers and confirm the number of boundaries scored by both teams in the main match - confirmed.

  • This number was then given to all the match umpires to communicate to both teams in the event of a tied super over.

  • 3rdumpire got a copy of the SO playing conditions to confirm some playing conditions and what happens in the event of a count backetc. (just in case).

  • 4th umpire confirmed that both teams had been informed of the boundaries scored number and that there was a difference of 4.

  • 4th umpire had the fielding team select the ball from the box

  • Fourth umpire advised that Narine was not going to field in the SO due to a finger injury - 3rd umpire queried it but on field umpire was satisfied it was a genuine injury.

  • 3rd umpire confirmed with all match officials that NZ had to score 5 more boundaries than WI in the SO in order to win in the event of a tied SO.

  • First over of the SOprocess started at 18.54 (6 minutes after the main game finished)

  • 3rd umpire used some ball counting / scoring sheet to record times and process notes.

  • First SO over was completed at 18.58(4 minute over) - 17 runs were scored

  • Both on field umpires remained on the field of play

  • 4th umpire collected the ball from the previous over and put it into the box and available for the second team to select

  • 3rd umpire asked the 4th umpire to go to the WI dressing room following the ball selection to ensure the batsmen came out to the field ASAP.

  • 2nd over in the SO started at 19.06 (8 minutes after the previous over was finished).

  • 2nd over in the SO finished at 19.11 (5 minutes -after 5 legal deliveries)

The only other thing we could have told both the teams after the 1st over was that WI only had to score 17 to win (not 18) as they had more boundaries in the main match plus SO over.
